Jamie Hampton has achieved excellent success in Europe…
In the fifth part of a 7-part
series of articles, I look at how American players fare abroad. This
research project was given to me by a Twitter follower – so if you would like
me to analyse/research something for you then please get in touch. There will
be a number of articles and resources added between now and the start of the
season in January.
I’ve split this analysis into a
number of categories – US male players in the top 150 playing non-US/Canadian
main draw ATP events only (split into European and Asian/Australasian events),
South American players with any rank playing European Challengers (this
research area was specifically suggested) and US female players in the top 150
playing non-US/Canadian main draw WTA events (split into European and Asian/Australasian
events).
In the previous articles, we’ve
already seen that American players in the ATP have a generally terrible record
abroad, both in Europe and Asia/Australasia, so now we move on to the WTA Tour
to assess whether this also applies to women players…
For clarity, my policy on
retirements here was void them if the first set wasn’t completed, and I’m using
Pinnacle Sports starting prices for my analysis.
There are currently 16 US
players in the WTA top 150 with Serena Williams – ranked 1 – unsurprisingly leading
the pack. Only her and Sloane Stephens are currently ranked inside the top
20 in the world, with Jamie Hampton, Madison Keys, Venus Williams and Bethanie
Mattek-Sands also joining them in the top 50.
Here’s the data for each

Overall
Combined US Top 150 Stats:-
2012
– 137 matches, 85 wins – Profit/Loss to level £100 stakes = £2869 (ROI 20.94%)
2013
– 152 matches, 89 wins – Profit/Loss to level £100 stakes = £1483 (ROI 9.76%)
2012/2013
Combined – 289 matches, 174 wins – Profit/Loss to level £100 stakes = £4352 (15.06%)
Clearly
we can see from the combined stats that the US women are the complete opposite
to the US men. The ATP players struggled
badly in European matches but the WTA players thrived, with a superb combined
ROI of 15.06% from 2012 and 2013 from a decent sample of 289 matches.
It
appears that the top 50 current players have excellent records, with those six
players (identified in the introduction to the article) having won 118 from 160
matches, generating profits of £4812 from level £100 stakes bets, with a
stellar ROI of 30.08% from those 160 matches.
The
players outside the top 50 recorded a loss of £460 from 129 matches (-3.57%
ROI) so the seems to be a huge disparity between the two ranking brackets.
It’s
definitely worth keeping an eye on the top 50 US WTA players with a view to
keeping them onside in European events, with the possible exception of Venus
Williams. She only crossed the Atlantic
twice in 2013, and lost both matches, and as her career winds down, it would be
asking a lot to see this change.
As
we’ve seen previously, this could not be said at all with the men on the ATP
Tour (a blanket approach of laying them in all matches could be considered), so
this difference is stark between the two tours – giving yet further evidence
that the ATP & WTA tours need to be treated as two totally different
entities.
