Set Betting and Handicap Markets Explained

Beyond simple match-winner betting, tennis markets include a range of alternative formats — set betting and handicap markets among the most common — that allow for more granular expression of a probability view. Understanding how these markets work is useful for interpreting the full range of tennis pricing.

Set betting

Set betting requires predicting the exact set score of a match (for example, 2-0 or 2-1 in a best-of-three match, or a wider range of possible scorelines in a best-of-five). This is a more granular market than simple match-winner betting, since it requires being right not just about who wins, but by what set margin.

Market TypeBest-of-3 Possible OutcomesBest-of-5 Possible Outcomes
Match winner2 (Player A or B)2 (Player A or B)
Set betting4 (2-0 A, 2-1 A, 2-0 B, 2-1 B)8 (3-0, 3-1, 3-2 for each player)

Because there are more possible outcomes, individual set-betting prices are generally longer than match-winner prices, and accurately assessing them requires a probability model that can estimate not just overall match win probability, but the distribution of likely set-score outcomes specifically.

Handicap (spread) betting

Handicap markets apply a game or set “head start” (or deficit) to each player, adjusting the effective margin required to win the bet. For example, a -3.5 games handicap on the favourite means that player needs to win their actual games total minus 3.5 to “win” the handicap bet — effectively requiring a more dominant victory than simply winning the match outright.

Handicap markets can offer more balanced betting opportunities when players have a significant difference in ability. Unlike match-winner markets, which focus only on who wins, handicap markets require accurate predictions of the margin of victory.

Why handicap markets require different analytical inputs

Unlike a simple win/loss probability estimate, handicap markets require an estimate of the expected games (or sets) margin — not just who is more likely to win. This draws more heavily on the hold/break percentage framework discussed in Day 3, since projecting an expected games margin requires estimating how many games each player is likely to win across the match, not just the probability of winning enough sets to win overall.

A simplified illustration

ScenarioPlayer A Games Won (Projected)Player B Games Won (Projected)Projected Margin
Even match-up1211+1 (A)
Moderate favourite138+5 (A)
Heavy favourite125+7 (A)

For example, a -5.5-game handicap may be difficult for a moderate favourite to cover but much easier for a heavy favourite, showing why predicting the expected games margin matters.

Total games and other alternative markets

Related markets include total games over/under (predicting whether the combined games played across the match will exceed or fall short of a set number) and total sets markets. These require similar underlying inputs — projected games and sets distributions — rather than simple win probability alone.

Why these markets can behave differently to match-winner markets

Set betting, handicap, and totals markets also tend to attract less betting activity than match-winner markets. This may sometimes lead to less efficient pricing, although lower betting volume also means lower liquidity, which can affect market efficiency.

Summary

Set betting, handicap and totals markets require a more granular probability framework than simple match-winner analysis — specifically, an estimate of the expected games and sets distribution, not just an overall win probability. Understanding these mechanics allows for a more complete picture of the full range of tennis betting markets available around a single match.
