Here are our unofficial WTA world rankings, based on the combined sum of service hold and opponent break percentages for the whole of 2013.
The top players show more difference than the ATP with Simona Halep making a well deserved entry into the top 10, as well as Shuai Zhang (smaller sample size but very impressive results) and Ana Ivanovic also breaking through. The stats show Petra Kvitova is currently highly flattered by her current ranking.
Those players with a negative difference (TennisRatings ranking is better than their world ranking) may well show players that are under-rated in the betting market, and therefore those with a high positive difference (indicating their world ranking flatters their stats) may well be worth opposing in the future…
There are several caveats:-
1 – These are all-surface hold/break stats. It goes without saying that some players are better on different surfaces. The relevant surface stats, along with projected holds (based on opponent quality, court speed and other factors) for each player daily and much more can be found via the Tier One and Tier Two daily spreadsheets.
2 – Shuai Zhang’s stats are flattered by playing lots of low point events and she has a small sample size.
3 – Several players had long lay-offs or don’t play many events which affect their world ranking. Petkovic, Venus Williams, Vekic and Mattek-Sands are notable in this respect.
